Yoga styles explained: which class is right for you?

"Yoga" on a timetable can mean a sweaty power flow or a near-nap under a blanket. Picking the right style is the difference between loving your first class and never coming back. Here's what each common style actually feels like, in plain terms.

Vinyasa / Flow

Movement linked to breath, flowing from one pose to the next. The pace is up, you'll warm up and probably sweat, and no two classes are quite the same. Great if you want energy, a bit of cardio, and variety. Look for "Beginner" or "Slow Flow" if you're new — "Power" flows move fast.

Hatha

Slower and more held — you move into a pose, settle, and breathe before the next. It's the classic foundation: ideal for learning alignment and building a base without the pace of a flow. A safe, friendly first class for most people.

Yin & Restorative

The calm end of the spectrum. Yin holds mostly seated/floor poses for two to five minutes to work into deep connective tissue and hips — intense in a quiet way. Restorative is gentler still: fully supported with props, closer to guided relaxation. Both are brilliant for stress, recovery days, and sleep.

Hot yoga

Any style (often vinyasa or a set sequence) run in a heated room. The heat loosens muscles and makes everything sweatier and more intense. Hydrate well beforehand, bring a towel and plenty of water, and take it easy your first time — step out if you feel light-headed.

How to choose

Want energy and a workout? Vinyasa or hot. Learning the basics? Hatha or a beginner flow. Stressed, stiff, or recovering? Yin or restorative. When in doubt, a class tagged Beginner or All Levels is always a safe start — and instructors expect first-timers, so just say it's your first class.

Common questions

I've never done yoga — where do I start?
A Hatha class or a Beginner/Slow Flow. They teach alignment at a manageable pace. Avoid Power or fast Vinyasa for your very first class.
What do I bring?
Comfortable, fairly fitted clothing and water. Studios provide mats and props, though many people bring their own mat once they're hooked. For hot yoga, bring a towel and extra water.
Which yoga is best for stress or sleep?
Yin and Restorative — slow, held, deeply relaxing. They're designed to down-regulate your nervous system rather than rev it up.
