About strength training
Strength training builds muscle and force production through resistance — barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells and machines. Coached classes and small-group sessions at Irish gyms take you through compound lifts like the squat, deadlift and press, plus accessory work, with a coach watching your form and loading.
It's for anyone who wants to get stronger, move better and build resilient joints — not just powerlifters. Beginners are welcome at most coached sessions; the coach scales the weight and teaches the movement. Wear flat, stable shoes, bring water, and don't be afraid to start light.
Strength training — FAQs
- Can beginners do strength training classes?
- Absolutely. Coached classes are built to teach the lifts and scale the weight to your level. Tell the coach you're new and they'll start you with technique before load.
- What should I wear for strength training?
- Flat, stable shoes (soft running shoes aren't ideal for heavy lifting), comfortable clothing you can move in, and a water bottle.
- How often should I strength train?
- Two to three sessions a week is a common starting point, with rest days between. A coach can help you build a schedule around your goals.
