About spin & cycling
Spin — indoor cycling — is a coached cardio class on a stationary bike, usually run in a low-lit room to a driving playlist. The instructor calls climbs, sprints and recoveries while you control your own resistance, so a beginner and a seasoned rider can ride the same class at very different efforts.
It's low-impact and easy on the joints, which makes it a popular way back into cardio. Arrive early for your first class so the instructor can set your bike — saddle and handlebar height matter — bring water and a towel, and consider padded shorts or cycling shoes if you get hooked.
Spin & cycling — FAQs
- Is spin hard on the knees?
- Spin is low-impact and generally easy on the joints, provided your bike is set up correctly. Arrive early to your first class so the instructor can adjust the saddle and bars to your height.
- Do I need cycling shoes for spin?
- Not to start — most studios have bikes with cages for regular trainers, and many provide clip-in shoes. If you ride regularly, your own cycling shoes can make it more comfortable.
- What should I bring to a spin class?
- Water, a towel and supportive trainers. Padded shorts help on longer rides. Each studio's page lists what they provide.
