About pilates

Pilates is a low-impact method that builds core strength, control and mobility through precise, controlled movement. Irish studios teach it two main ways: mat Pilates, using your bodyweight and small props on the floor, and reformer Pilates, on a spring-loaded carriage that adds resistance and support. Classes are usually capped at a small size so the instructor can correct technique.

It suits almost everyone — people rehabbing an injury, runners and lifters chasing better movement, and anyone who sits at a desk all day. Wear fitted clothing (loose gear gets in the way on the reformer), bring grip socks if the studio requires them, and tell the instructor about any injuries before you start.

Pilates — FAQs

What's the difference between mat and reformer Pilates?
Mat Pilates uses your bodyweight and small props on the floor; reformer Pilates uses a spring-loaded machine that adds both resistance and support. Reformer classes tend to be smaller and a little pricier, but both build the same core control.
Is Pilates good for beginners?
Yes. Most studios run beginner or foundations classes, and the controlled pace makes it one of the most beginner-friendly disciplines. Let the instructor know it's your first class.
Do I need grippy socks for Pilates?
Many reformer studios require grip socks for hygiene and safety. Check the studio's page or bring a pair to be safe — some studios sell them at reception.
