About boxing
Boxing classes blend conditioning with real technique — footwork, head movement and combinations on the bag and pads. Irish gyms run sessions ranging from fitness-focused, high-rep bag work to technical classes and sparring for those who want it. Kickboxing and Muay Thai add kicks, knees and clinch work.
You don't need any experience to start — beginner and fundamentals classes teach the basics from stance up. Bring hand wraps and water; many gyms loan gloves to start, though most regulars buy their own. Tell the coach if it's your first class so they can pair you appropriately.
Boxing — FAQs
- Do I need my own gloves to start boxing?
- Usually not — many gyms loan gloves for your first few classes. You'll want hand wraps for hygiene and wrist support, and most people buy their own gloves once they're committed.
- Is boxing just for fit people?
- No. Fundamentals and fitness classes are designed for beginners and build conditioning as you go. You set the intensity on the bag, and sparring is always optional.
- What's the difference between boxing and kickboxing?
- Boxing uses punches only; kickboxing and Muay Thai add kicks, knees and (in Muay Thai) clinch work. Studios label their classes so you can pick what you're after.
