About barre

Barre fuses ballet-inspired movement with Pilates and strength work. Using a ballet barre for support, classes work through small, controlled pulses that target the legs, glutes, core and arms until they burn — building strength, posture and muscular endurance without heavy weights or impact.

No dance background is needed. Classes suit most fitness levels and are popular with people who want toned, controlled strength and better posture. Wear fitted activewear and grip socks (most studios require them), and bring water.

Barre — FAQs

Do I need ballet or dance experience for barre?
Not at all. Barre borrows the barre and a few positions from ballet, but classes are built for all levels with no dance background required.
Will barre build strength?
Yes — the high-rep, controlled pulses build muscular endurance and strength, especially through the legs, glutes and core, while improving posture. It's deceptively challenging.
What do I wear to a barre class?
Fitted activewear so the instructor can see your alignment, plus grip socks, which most studios require. Bring a water bottle.
